HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WLRH) - Friday is the deadline to register to vote in Alabama's constitutional amendment referendum on Sept. 18. Thursday, Sept. 13 is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot for the referendum. The referendum is for a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow state officials to take $437 million out of a state trust fund over three years to help finance the state General Fund budget.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WLRH) - The Huntsville police department’s driving under the influence task force was busy over the labor day weekend working numerous checkpoints as part of its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Between Friday and Monday, officers issued more than 160 citations and made 10 arrests for DUI. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Huntsville Times) - The Huntsville school board approved a new budget last week for the 2013 fiscal year. The Huntsville times reports that the approved budget will give the school system about $14 million in the bank by the end of September 2013. That is a major turnaround for the district, which found itself nearly $20 million in debt - with no cash reserves - at the end of the 2010 fiscal year. In other business, the board approved a five-year, $176 million capital plan that includes rebuilding Martin Luther King Jr. and University Place elementary schools, Whitesburg P-8 and Grissom and Johnson high schools. Milton Frank Stadium is also slated to be rebuilt, and the district will construct a ninth-grade academy at Huntsville High School.
