WWII Mission: Medium Altitude Bombing in the Combat Environment with WWII Veteran Joseph Connaughton

Sunday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. Free to Museum members/Included in general admission for non-members. Joseph Connaughton, a Veteran of World War II and 1st Lt. Bombardier/Navigator in the legendary Colonel Randy’s Flying Circus 319th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Corps, will give a talk on “Medium Altitude Bombing in the Combat Environment.” He will take you on the first mission he used the Norden Bombsight from the early morning briefing, takeoff, in-flight activity, the bomb run, target destruction, post-bombing activity, landing and debriefing. It was the beginning of a major air offensive in Northern Italy to cut 22 bridges across the Po River and isolate General Kesselring’s Armies from supplies. He will also show results of other bombing targets noting factors that hinder accuracy. The Museum’s Education Department will host a reception following the presentation in the Richard and Roper Room.
