Our gift to you this season is an exciting schedule of special programs bursting with holiday cheer! You’ll hear old favorites and new classics from APM, NPR, PRX, and more, plus our locally produced Holiday specials too, enjoy! 

Monday, December 7th
- Hollywood Holiday at 11:00 AM
Lynne Warfel takes you on a one-hour musical retrospective of some of Hollywood's most cherished Christmas themed movies. Including scores from Scrooge, the Musical, A Muppet Christmas Carol, The Polar Express, It's A Wonderful Life and many more.
 
Tuesday, December 8th
- Welcome Christmas! at 11:00 AM
There’s no better way to welcome Christmas than Welcome Christmas, the VocalEssence holiday concert. It's a new, joyful, classic holiday music special, hosted by John Birge.
 
Thursday, December 10th
- Apollo's Fire presents Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain: An Irish-Appalachian Celebration at 11:00 AM
Fiddlers, medieval harp, hammered dulcimer, bagpipes, singers, and children’s voices join together to evoke the Celtic roots of an Appalachian holiday. In this one-hour special, the listener is transported from Christmas Eve in medieval Scotland to the folk carols and shape‐note hymns at a toe‐tapping Christmas gathering in Virginia.
 
Monday, December 14th
A Chanukah Celebration with Chicago a cappella
at 10:00 AM
Join Jonathan Miller, artistic director of virtuoso vocal ensemble, Chicago a cappella and a longtime champion of Jewish choral music, for an inspiring and informative show featuring choral music set to Chanukah texts. Jonathan Miller provides liturgical and cultural background as part of this unique look inside old and newer choral Chanukah traditions.

- Candles Burning Brightly at 11:00 AM
A one-hour celebration of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights with an exploration of Chanukah foods and traditional activities... and plenty of music.  
 
Tuesday, December 15th
- Beethoven: Beyond the Silence at 11:00 AM
We mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth with this special tribute to one of the most notable composers of all time. Hosts David Nicholas and Judy Wagley take listeners on a journey through Beethoven’s life through story and music. Featuring a representative selection from Beethoven’s early, middle and late periods including piano, chamber and orchestral works taken from outstanding recordings.
 
Thursday, December 17th
- All is Bright: Contemplative Music for Christmas at 11:00 AM
Lynne Warfel hosts an hour of gorgeous, contemplative choral music that tells the traditional Christmas story with songs about angels, the star and the manger scene. Featured artists include Cantus, Chanticleer, Cambridge Singers, Bryn Terfel, Emma Kirkby, Jessye Norman, and a variety of choirs.
 
Friday, December 18th
- Jazz Night In America: A Holiday Celebration at 9:00 AM
Jazz Night in America provides the perfect complement of swinging holiday classics featuring The Sherman Irby sextet recorded live at Dizzy's Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center. Christian McBride hosts.

- A Mountain Stage Holiday at 10:00 AM
Join Mountain Stage host Larry Gross for an hour filled with beautiful music to mark the season. The show features special guests Holly Cole, Joan Baez, Bruce Cockburn, Loudon Wainwright III, The Roches, Kathy Mattea and more.

- A Paul Winter Solstice at 11:00 AM
On the darkest night of the year, we head back to New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear a new performance of The Paul Winter Consort and the glorious Cathedral Pipe Organ. John Schaefer hosts.

- Reelin’ In The Year Christmas Special at 9:00 PM
Bob Labbe delivers his annual Christmas show with classic pop music Christmas tunes along with his usual "obscure" holiday tunes, all played on original 45 rpm records.
 
Saturday, December 19th
- Brass, Reeds, and Percussion at 11:00 AM
Host John Hightower brings you a BRP Christmas concert featuring all Advent and Christmas music arranged specifically for the wind band.
 
Monday, December 21st
- Sundial Writers Corner with Kathryn Tucker Windham at 9:00 AM
One of the longest running voices in our wonderful Sundial tradition, legendary story-master Kathryn Tucker Windham takes us on a Christmas ride.

- Fiesta! Latin American Christmas Carols at 11:00 AM
A selection of villancicos, or Christmas carols, from Spain and Latin America are featured on this joyous Christmas-themed program from Fiesta. Join us for music that spans several centuries and a great diversity of influences and traditions!
 
Tuesday, December 22nd
- St. Olaf Choir Christmas at 11:00 AM
The St. Olaf Christmas Festival is a chance for listeners across the country and around the world to participate in one of the nation’s most treasured holiday celebrations, hosted by Valerie Kahler.
 
Thursday, December 24th
- A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at 9:00 AM
A yearly WLRH tradition...share in a live, world-wide Christmas Eve broadcast of a service of Biblical readings, carols, and related seasonal ‘classical’ music (anthems a cappella and with organ accompaniment, and congregational hymns), presented by King’s College.

- A Chanticleer Christmas at 11:00 AM
Celebrate the season with holiday favorites, new and old, presented live in concert by the superb 12-man ensemble known as "an orchestra of voices."
 
Friday, December 25th
- Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square at 9:00 AM
A holiday celebration featuring a choir of 360 voices, a 150-piece orchestra at Temple Square, the 32-member Bells on Temple Square, along with other artists and special guests.

- A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at 10:00 AM
A yearly WLRH tradition, repeated for Christmas morning. The encore of the Christmas Eve broadcast of a service of Biblical readings, carols, and related seasonal ‘classical’ music (anthems a cappella and with organ accompaniment, and congregational hymns), presented by King’s College.
 
Saturday, December 26th
- Post-Christmas Fun with Talkin’ the Blues at 9:00 PM
Host Microwave Dave presents his annual Christmas Blues edition of Talkin' the Blues. Finding that many experience 'post-holiday blues' onset right after Christmas Day, laugh along and commiserate with a selection of recordings ranging from current to century-old.
 
Monday, December 28th
- Christmas Memories with Dee Alexander at 10:00 AM
Host Dee Alexander’s music and stories are sure to keep you warm and hopeful through the holiday season. In this special, Dee shares songs that inspire celebration and spark nostalgia for the holiday, spinning classics like Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song and Mahalia Jackson’s No Room at the Inn.  

- The Film Score: Music for the Winter Holidays at 11:00 AM
Join host Michael Phillips for this special devoted to holiday and wintertime movie music. In addition to beloved holiday standards Michael also shares an eclectic mix of wintry film scores.

- Hygge Holiday: Cozy Classics at 11:00 AM Join host Elena See as she plays a mix of wintry and nostalgic classical pieces designed to accompany listeners as they enjoy cozy wintertime activities.

- Julie's Library: A Family Feast at 9:00 AM
Join beloved icon Julie Andrews for story time! Julie and her daughter, children’s author and educator Emma Walton Hamilton, invite you into their library to read their favorite children's books.
 
Friday, January 1st
- New Year's Day From Vienna 2021 at 10:00 AM
The ever popular annual New Year’s Day Concert will be performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker under the baton of Maestro Riccardo Muti. You'll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more -- a great way to start off 2021. Hosted by WBUR's Lisa Mullins.
