Brass, Reeds, and Percussion (May 13, 2017)

Before sales of MP3 files, sales of compact discs, and records; before radio, MTV, and iTunes, how was the popularity of tunes determined? Sales of sheet music, typically for piano with lyrics for singing.

Tin Pan Alley in New York City was the place where most of this popular sheet music was written in during late 19th century and early 20th century. Specifically, Tin Pin Alley is West 28th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. The name Tin Pin Alley probably came from the sounds many pianos, all playing at once. Tin Pan Alley songwriters often modified their pianos to have a more percussive sound, another aspect that may have given rise to the expression. Today’s edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion begins with a medley of tune from this gold era of American music.
