Who conducted the U.S. Marine Band after John Philip Sousa resigned from that post in 1892?

Francesco Fanciulli, born in Italy in 1853. A graduate of the Florence Conservatory, he became known as a cornet virtuoso in Italy before he immigrated to the United States at age 24—where he worked as a church organist and voice instructor. Eventually, he became an orchestra conductor. Curiously, at a Memorial Day parade in 1894 while serving as the conductor the Marine Band, he was arrested because a disagreement with the commander of the U.S. Marine detachment over the marches the band was playing. A court martial followed, resulting in the punishment of a dishonorable discharge. But acting Secretary of the Navy Teddy Roosevelt commuted the sentence and Fanciulli remained conductor of the band until 1895 when his enlistment ran out. Some of Fanciulli’s marches are featured on today’s edition.
