Decatur Community Walk - Votes For Women Trail Marker

Friday, June 4, 2021

You can participate in a community walk by meeting in suffragist and period costumes. Folks will meet at the Old Decatur Depot at 701 Railroad St NW at 1:40 p.m. on Friday, June 4. We will take a short march to the National Votes for Women’s Trail Marker dedication site at the corner of Bank Street and Vine Street, Decatur, Alabama (site of the old Echol’s Opera House where Susan B. Anthony spoke in 1895). Community leaders will provide a short dedication to acknowledge Decatur’s key role in all women gaining the right to vote. Then at 2 p.m., the City of Decatur, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the Alabama Women’s Suffrage Centennial Committee, the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites and local historian Ms. Peggy Towns will proudly dedicate the Marker which will be located at the corner of Bank Street and Vine Street in downtown Decatur, across the street from the Morgan County Archives. This marker is provided in recognition of Decatur’s role in history as the site for the first Women’s Suffrage Club in the State of Alabama and to honor the women of the suffrage movement.
