Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: July 8, 2023

As usual, "variety" is the watchword of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion. This edition features original classical wind-band music, movie music, dance music, flapper music from the 1920s, and even music inspired by a Japanese sculpture erected in Canada.

The program opens with two well-known songs from that the 1920s: “Ain't She Sweet” composed in 1927 and “Toot, Toot, Tootsie,” composed in 1922. Both versions are performed by Enoch Light and the Light Brigade. Not only was Enoch Light a major big-band leader during the 1950s and 1960s, but he was also a pioneering recording engineer. When stereo became the new technology for recordings, he was determined to demonstrate its possibilities. So his recordings, some of the first stereo recordings, often have a wide divergence in sound between the left and right channels.
