Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: July 22, 2023

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features two tone poems that depict trips to amusement parks: one by a Japanese composer born in 1979 and the other by a German composer born in 1855. But this edition opens with two marches by Gabriel Pares, a French composer who conducted the Band of the Republican Guard for 17 years, from 1893 to 1910. He wrote numerous marches for military band. He also wrote numerous arrangements or transcriptions of music for military band. He began his musical training as a trombonist, but eventually became a well-known cornet player after attending courses in cornet playing at the Paris Conservatory. Before becoming conductor of the Band of the Republican Guard, he was the conductor of both French army and navy bands.

Born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1951, John moved to Huntsville in 1975, where he worked for a communications training firm. From 1997 to 2022, John worked for the Lanier Ford law firm. During his tenure, He served as Lanier Ford's law librarian, marketing specialist, trainer, and professional recruiter. While in college and law school, John worked in professional radio in Starkville and Oxford, Mississippi.
