Lineworkers Take Center Stage at John Hunt Park for National Rodeo
If you’ve driven past John Hunt Park in recent weeks, you may have noticed something unusual, rows of 40-foot utility poles rising from the ground like a carefully planted grove.
They’re part of the setup for the American Public Power Association Lineworkers Rodeo, taking place Saturday, March 28. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 a.m., with competition running through 3 p.m.
The event brings together some of the nation’s top lineworkers to compete in challenges that reflect the real-world demands of the job. This year, 61 journeyman teams, each made up of two linemen and one ground support, will rotate roles as they’re judged on safety, skill, and speed. Alongside them, 137 apprentices from 19 states will compete in their own division.
While journeymen compete as teams, apprentices go head-to-head as individuals. Their events include pole climbing, equipment replacement, rescue scenarios, and a written test, with overall winners determined by combined performance.
The competition highlights a profession that is both highly skilled and high risk. Lineworkers routinely face dangerous conditions, from high-voltage lines to hazardous work environments, often in the midst of storms and emergency response.
The rodeo is open to the public and designed to be family-friendly, with food trucks, a kids zone, and additional activities planned throughout the day.
