Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: May 9 and 13, 2026

This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features marches composed by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, who lived from 1835 to 1921. He was also an organist, pianist, and conductor, who personally conducted the premier of his Symphony No. 3 (“Organ Symphony”) in London in 1888. During that same concert, he performed Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto, with Sir Arthur Sullivan conducting the orchestra. In 1893 at Cambridge University, Saint-Saëns participated in a concert that also included the violist Max Bruch and Peter Tchaikovsky. We will begin today’s edition with a march Saint-Saëns composed for band in 1918 during WW I: “Towards Victory.”
