Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: May 30 and June 3, 2026
Born in 1886 near LaPlace, Louisiana, Edward “Kid” Ory was a trombone player, bandleader, and jazz composer. His primary contribution to Dixieland was the glissando or smear. He first learned to play the banjo, but changed to trombone. During the 1910s, he led one the most popular New Orleans bands. During the 1960s, he was a leader in the Dixieland revival during that period. This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion showcases three compositions by Kid Ory. But not only is the music composed by Kid Ory, but he plays trombone on all three. By the way, the fellow playing trumpet on these recordings is named Louis Armstrong. Brass, Reeds, and Percussion opens with Ory’s “Muskrat Ramble.”
