Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: June 13 and 17, 2026

When Brass, Reeds, and Percussion speaks of Turkish music, we don’t mean the music of Turkey. Instead, we mean a genre of Western classical music that was based on the music of Turkish military bands. Indeed, most of our Western percussion instruments are based on the instruments of the Turkish military bands encountered during the 1683 Battle of Vienna when the Muslim Ottoman Empire almost captured Vienna. These instruments include tympani, the bass drum, the snare drum, cymbals, triangle, and the jingling johnny. Today’s edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features Turkish music composed by Mozart, Michael Haydn, Louis Spohr, and Rossini.
