Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: July 11 and 15, 2026
This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features an Argentine march performed when the Germans marched into Paris at the beginning of WW II and when the Americans marched into Paris at the end of WW II. Cayetano Alberto Silva composed “San Lorenzo” in 1901, and it quickly became an official Argentine army march. It is still popular march in Argentina, with school children being taught the lyrics. Of African descent, Silva was born in Uruguay, but emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1899. Most of his life was lived in Mendoza, where he served as a police captain, lead the police band, and helped to found the fire department band. Brass, Reeds, and Percussion begins with “San Lorenzo” performed by the U.S. Marine Band.
