Syd Rose enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1947 as a band boy at age 14. He played cornet and trumpet. From age 14 to 18, he was assigned to a band camp for the Royal Marines. At age 18, he was assigned to a ship’s band. In 1960, he was selected to attend the bandmaster’s class at the Royal Marines School of Music and became a bandmaster in 1961. After conducting a number of bands, he became professor of trumpet at the Royal Marines School of Music.
