Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: May 16 and 20, 2026

The Romans celebrated bacchanals, wild parties involving drinking, eating, dancing, loud music, and pagan activities. The name comes from Roman god of wine: Bacchus. The source of the bacchanal is traced to an earlier Greek celebration in honor of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. The Greeks are said to have celebrated in a more restrained way. The musical composition that depicts such a celebration is called a bacchanale. This edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion features wind-band arrangements of two of the most famous of bacchanales — one from Camille Saint-Saëns and the other from Alexander Glazunov — right after an opening march by Fred Jewell.
