Brass, Reeds, and Percussion: May 2 and 6, 2026

The baroque composers Johan Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel were almost exact contemporaries, both being born in 1685. But there is a third baroque composer who was born before Bach and Handel and died after them: Georg Philipp Telemann, who lived from 1681 to 1767. All three composers knew each other. Bach and Handel even bought music published by Telemann to study. And Telemann was the godfather of Bach’s son Carl Phillip Emanual Bach. Telemann was a prolific composer who also composed wind music, which you will hear on this edition of Brass, Reeds, and Percussion right after an opening march by the Czech composer František Kmoch.
