Capitol Exchange, February 20, 2026

A Senate committee advanced a bill that would let the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency take over oversight of certain local police departments. Senate Bill 298, sponsored by Sen. Will Barfoot, R-Pike Road, would require Class 3 cities like Montgomery and Huntsville to staff at least two full-time police officers per 1,000 residents within five years. Cities falling short could be placed under ALEA oversight until staffing rebounds.

Democrats argue the bill is unnecessary, noting Montgomery officials say recruitment is improving. Opponents also warn it could pull officers from smaller departments and strain state resources. Barfoot maintains the legislation addresses those concerns.
