Absentee Ballot Resources
Alabama and Tennessee do not have a mail-in ballot system that extends the polling period, but they do both allow for absentee voting for specific reasons.
- Out of town on polling day
- Working a minimum 10-hour shift that precludes you from coming to a polling place
- Over the age of 60 and claiming physical restrictions
- being hospitalized, ill or physically disabled (or the primary caregiver for someone that is)
- full-time college student attending school outside your registered polling place
- serving in a military post outside of your registered polling place
- a US citizen living abroad
- serving on jury duty
In addition to these common reasons between these states, in Alabama, you can also claim:
- working as a poll worker or election officer outside your precinct
- being in jail
- inability to use an inaccessible polling place
