Lavone Wolfe: A Disc Golf Pioneer in North Alabama
When Lavone Wolfe first saw a flying disc being thrown in a gym at the University of North Alabama in the 1970s, he had no idea it would spark a lifelong passion and make him one of the most influential figures in organized disc golf. Today, Wolf — a Professional Disc Golf Association Hall of Fame inductee and course designer — has helped grow the sport both locally and nationally, from humble campus “object golf” beginnings to championship-level courses and community engagement.
Wolfe shared how those early experiences with frisbee pioneers like Tom Monroe and Ken Westerfield set the stage for decades of involvement as a player, tournament organizer, and designer. He has since designed or consulted on more than 70 courses, blending sport, landscape, and strategy to create layouts that challenge advanced players while remaining accessible to newcomers.
Wolfe also explained how disc golf has continued to evolve, especially with the variety of discs players carry — from putters to drivers — each chosen for specific shot shapes and conditions. This gear diversity, he says, helps players tackle everything from tight tree lines to wide open fairways and is part of what makes disc golf uniquely strategic.
One of the most exciting developments for the local disc golf community is that the 2027 PDGA Amateur World Championships will be hosted in the Huntsville and Madison County area. The event will bring competitors from around the world to play on courses like John Hunt Park, Mastin Lake, Sharon Johnston Park, and Sunshine Oaks.
For those looking to try disc golf or get involved locally, Wolfe points to the active community spirit around the sport. Weekly events, doubles, and tournaments are shared on the North Alabama Disc Golf Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/290553207711395/) — a hub for players of all skill levels to connect.
