Let’s Get Weird: Dodging Bat Guano and Cave Crickets!
On this two-part edition of Let’s Get Weird with Katy and Marsha, the duo explores the fascinating world beneath North Alabama.
In Part 1, they travel to Sauta Cave near Scottsboro to witness the spectacular nightly emergence of up to 400,000 gray bats. Conservation and Science Division Head Emily P. Davis with the National Speleological Society explains the cave’s unique history, its role in protecting an endangered species, and why preserving habitats like Sauta Cave is so important.
Then, in Part 2, Katy and Marsha trade the soft light of the evening sky for bright headlamps, as experienced caver and Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (SCCI) member Sabrina Simon leads them deep into Tumbling Rock Cave. The ladies discover that caving is fun and educational, even if you fall down hard on your booty. (Katy’s totally fine now!)
Special thanks to Emily P. Davis, Sabrina Simon, and the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. for sharing their knowledge and helping preserve these extraordinary places for future generations.
