IRS Criminal Investigation Warns of Rising Financial Scams and Identity Theft

Financial scams continue to evolve as criminals use technology, artificial intelligence, and social engineering tactics to target individuals and businesses. In this interview, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Kristen Yukness of the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office discusses some of the most common financial crimes her agency is seeing across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Yukness explains how scammers exploit trust and create a sense of urgency to convince victims to transfer money, share personal information, or click malicious links. She also offers practical advice for preventing identity theft, securing online accounts, and recognizing the warning signs of business email compromise schemes.

The conversation includes important guidance on what to do if you suspect you’ve been targeted by a scam, as well as resources available through the IRS and law enforcement. Yukness’s key takeaway: pause before you pay, verify before you act, and don’t let criminals use pressure or emotion to influence your financial decisions.

If you have been scammed or have noticed suspicious activity you can contact the Atlanta Field Office by email at: [email protected] or go to their website IRS.gov
