Big Body Music Launches Fundraiser to Support Huntsville Area Schools Music Programs

Music programs in schools are often among the most underfunded programs in education, leaving teachers to stretch limited resources across growing classrooms. Huntsville musician and Big Body Music founder Ben Carruthers is hoping to help change that.

Carruthers has launched a fundraising initiative aimed at supporting Huntsville City Schools elementary music programs by helping provide instruments, ukuleles, classroom equipment, and other requested resources directly to teachers and students.

The effort hopes to raise $25,000 — roughly $1,000 for each elementary school music program in the district — to help fill gaps in funding for instruments and classroom supplies.

Carruthers says the idea grew out of conversations with local music educators who shared the challenges of maintaining equipment and finding resources for students interested in music.

During a recent interview, Carruthers explained why ukuleles became an early focus of the project, noting that the instruments are accessible for young students and can help build foundational music skills that translate into other instruments later on.

He also emphasized that the fundraiser is designed to directly support classrooms and teachers with the equipment they say they need most.
