Second VA Grant-Funded Cemetery Planned for North Alabama

About 400,000 veterans reside in the state of Alabama, and the state Veterans Affairs Board noticed a gap in Alabama’s northern region.

Tens of thousands of North Alabama’s population include veterans from the military, space, and defense sectors, yet the closest veterans cemetery is located hundreds of miles away.

This new, 150-acre cemetery will accommodate 150,000 burial plots to start. For long-term maintenance, Commissioner Jeff Newton says they will rely on volunteers to keep the grounds clean, and the Veterans Assistance Fund will provide a federal burial allowance of $1,000 per burial to the state V.A. to help recover operations costs.
