Why North Alabama’s Recent Rain Doesn’t Mean the Drought is Over

North Alabama has seen repeated rounds of rainfall in recent weeks, bringing flood warnings, saturated soil and a welcome break from dry conditions. But according to drought researcher Jonathan Case of the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s Earth System Science Center, it will take more than a few rainy days to erase months of rainfall deficits. On this episode of Tennessee Valley Mornings, Case explains the “weather whiplash” effect that can occur when drought conditions suddenly give way to heavy rain, why localized summer storms can make forecasts seem inaccurate, and what meteorologists will be watching in the weeks ahead to determine whether North Alabama is truly emerging from drought.
